Raina
Raina's paws tread softly on the cool stone floor as she entered the darkened den. Fire flickered on the walls, creating a warm glow that filled the cavern.
"You wanted to see to me?" She greeted her parents with a respectful nod.
Her mother stood. "Yes, Raina. Your father and I have been talking-"
“-And we have decided that it’s time you received your feathers.” He finished.
Raina tried to remain composed, but the excitement and joy building inside her escaped as a big grin. “Really? You think I’m ready?” She asked.
“Surviving for months in the city and finding your home is no small accomplishment. We know you are.” Her father said kindly.
Raina ducked her head in gratitude, then peeked up curiously as her mother came forward with two feathers in her mouth. She dropped them and they floated to land in front of Raina’s paws. The young female tried to hide the crushing disappointment. Plain old black crow feathers. She looked from her father to her mother. “T-thank you.” She managed.
To her surprise, her father laughed. “We’re not done yet, Raina.” He moved aside to reveal four bowls of bright paint that matched the colors of his daughter’s pelt.
“Come dip each feather into the pink paint.” Raina’s mother guided her.
A tingle of happiness shot through Raina, she should have known her parents had something more creative in mind. She stepped forward and carefully dipped each feather into the pink paint, leaving some black showing at the top.
Her father’s voice echoed through the den. “We have chosen this color to represent your compassionate and nurturing heart. Your have learned one of life’s greatest lessons, to love even when there is nothing to be gained for yourself. This is a true mark of maturity.”
Raina gazed up at him, so touched that tears threatened to flow from her eyes.
Her father nodded. “Now dip your feathers into the orange paint.” He said kindly.
Raina repeated the action. This time her mother spoke. “Raina, the orange represents your enthusiasm, creativity, and determination. Your happiness and upbeat attitude are contagious, and your perseverence inspires those around you!”
Next was the green paint, done the same as the first two, and explained by her father.
“Green represents how we’ve seen you grow into the beautiful young lady you are now. You’ve grown not only in body, but in courage, love, perseverance, originality, and so many other ways. It’s hard to believe our baby girl is all grown up now, but know that our love for you will only keep increasing.”
Finally, the tips of the feathers were dipped into the blue paint and Raina's mother spoke.
“This color represents your loyalty. You have proven yourself loyal to your family, your pack, and most recently, to your young beau.”
“We couldn’t be prouder of you, Raina.” Her father added.
Raina’s face was streaked with tears. She buried her face in his chest. “Thank you-”

Basil-Contest BI never really thought about small things like feathers when I was a child, well I still might be considered a child but in reality i'm quite older than I look. At times I asked my parents this question 'Can I get my feathers now?' or 'Why can't I just get them early?'. I really did like the thought of something unique tied around my tail, or even on my ear and at times I used to tie the plant I was named after, or 'Basil' on my tail pretending to have feathers. In my true teen years, I could care less about feathers, but around the age 17 I had randomly stopped growing, PPS was rare to happen in teen years but, It was true that I would be stuck in this short immature age for the rest of my life. Of course, there were quite a few PPS Kiamara's that had gotten feathers but I wanted to act grown and mature before I got my own feathers, but I doubted that. I tied a basil left back to my tail and as soon as I was able to I left to start my own life, despite my very young appearance and mind.
Once and a while the thought of feathers came to mind, I normally ignored the though of them telling myself that they were simply things that others tied around themselves for fun, but I finally allowed myself to daydream about getting feathers, after all a little story in my mind wouldn't cause harm. 'Simply something that comes from a bird, nothing special about it' I reminded myself when the thought came to mind knowing that I would probably never grow to get feathers, and I wondered if there really was something special about feathers that almost every other Kia I knew had, but I didn't know, that brought even more curiosity, that I couldn't push away not with the still young mind that I had.
At a time I hid my sadness of being a PPS under a happy smile and seemed to not care deeply about anything really, at that time I had actually snatched a feather off of a Kia named Felyx but before I could find anything different about it he had felt a weight gone from his tail and he yelled at me, but I had gotten used to it and I apoligised before running off. No-One else would take such a desperate measure for something as simple as a feather, but I really truly wanted to know what it felt like to grow, or at least feel like it.
So here I am, still without feathers, the something I always wanted but would never get, like a child because of course, i'll always have to act like one, look like one, but in reality I should be old, much older than I'll ever look.[469/500]

Bread Unlike my brother, Zacharie, who received our mothers feathers after she passed away I had to find a way to get my own since we didn't ever meet our father. In my life time I have found many feathers but none have suited my taste, soon I got tired of searching and used a couple of blue-jay feathers as 'my feathers' to cover up for the fact that my younger brother got his feathers before me. Before long friends and family questioned the authenticity of my feathers, even my beloved brother disagreed that I had settled for such boring and nontraditional feathers. I burned the feathers that night and went back to my small corner shop bakery to rest when a small idea crept its way out of the dark. Instead of searching for feathers of my own, why not make them? I spent the whole night up kneading and shaping the perfect feather for my wrist. Once I believed it had been perfected I set it in the oven for a bit letting the dough near the tip brown just the slightest. Ever since that day I have sported this dough feather as my feather and I will forever claim it as just that and nothing else.

for contest a note;; This story is about my kia avalon and includes her deceased friend. bluejay is not a real kia, but he was included in avalon's backstory. But you don't need to read that to get this. so yeah enough notes Avalon stood in the forest, watching the stars as she did every night. Beside her sat Bluejay, staring up at the stars intently. He hardly ever pried his gaze from the twinkling lights (or lighthouses, as they preferred to call them) above. Recently, Avalon had been thinking about growing up. More specifically feathers. Being a teenager on the verge of adulthood, she often wondered how she might get her feathers. Normally she would discuss such thoughts with Jay, but this topic was different. Jay was older than her, and already should've been considered an adult. However, for whatever reason, he didn't have feathers. Avalon avoided the subject, not wanting to touch on a topic that could be sensitive for her friend. wip hehheh

One Part Brave, three Parts Fool-- The sun just barely peeked through the tree's yet the birds insisted upon singing their morning songs no matter the time or weather, and I like that. They were like my dad, in a way. They always did what they felt their job was no matter the circumstances or how run down or beat or scared they were; instinct always won.
I on the other hand was more like...a deer, I suppose. I was okay with the birds yet not very trusting of anyone or anything but myself and the forest around me. I loved the peacefulness, happy with simply a cool day and a tree to rest under.
And Even though I was the eldest son, my brother Loki seemed to be favored among my parents, my father mostly as mother was more open and friendly. So, as a result I chose to spend the majority of my time alone in the forest away from out home, hunting or just being alone with myself and the wilderness I loved.
One day I woke up just before the rooster crowed, and decided I wanted to be independent. Like all teens I'm sure, but truth be told I didn't want to leave home. I just wanted to be an adult, be a man. So I packed up a couple of my belongings, grabbed my bow, and left before even my mother was cooking breakfast.
I walked for most the day, only stopping once to eat some bread and then drinking some water from a stream. To be honest, I didn't eat a lot in the couple days I was gone; I had my mind on my mission, not food.
The third day I was away, I was hunting for a small meal besides bread when I came across a baby robin on the ground. Normally, you would't think of a small deed like climbing the tree to put the poor thing back in it's nest as a manly thing to do, but I did. A true man knows compassion, so in exchange for putting the baby bird back into his nest with his own brothers, I took two of the red breast feathers littering the branch around the nest.
The next day, I returned to my own "nest". 'Course, my mother ran to me like I was still a child; hugging me and kissing me. My father stood in the house, glaring at me with the cold stare of his; like a raven waiting for it's meal. Later that night, my younger brother Loki congratulated me after I explained the story to my mother and him. My father never really talked to me after that.
I still keep the feathers tied to my tail and ear, so the memory is always in my head and the actions will always be behind me as part of my past. Someday, I hope my own son will become a man in his own way; like I did.

-- Dear Diary; it's been about a year since dad's been gone. Zano tries telling me he's in a better place, but I don't really see how. The dead can't be any better of than the living, besides not having to deal with the world's crap. Zach's been really quiet lately, more-so than usual. Not that I blame him, being raised by your older sibling is hard on both of us. I just want to grow up and be the mom i never had; and i want my kids to have a father like mine was.. I....I just wanted to get my feathers from dad, I guess.
--
"Puma?" I heard my older brother - Zano - call from the living room. sighing inwardly, i put the plates I had just cleaned away and dried my hands on my shirt as I peeked my head into the next room. "Yeah?"
"Telli and I have something we...or I, need to give you." He said. It wasn't my birthday, or Christmas, so at the time i was quite confused. I already had a cat, so it couldn't be that.
Walking over to the couch, I plopped down and crossed my legs. "What is it?" I asked Zano quietly; and in response he showed me a small, wooden box with a feather carved into the top.
"I know how hard dad's death was on you and Zach, and I know how much you wanted to get your feathers from him. truth is, you can't and I'm sorry. But that doesn't mean you have to stay a child forever." Zano explained, handing me the box.
i sighed as it fell into my hands. i didn't like talking about the fact dad was gone, but I opened it anyways, Letting out a gasp; I covered my mouth.
inside were three feathers; two like a blue jay's, only green.. The other...white the sides tipped with green and orange. Dad's feather.
Tears began to well up in my eyes as I took the white one and tied it around my wrist - ignoring the other for the moment. "Z-Zano I..." I choked out, covering my mouth to hold back a sob that should've been released long ago. "What about Zach's?"
"Don't worry, mom and dad had matching feathers. He'll get his when he gets back from Bliv's house."
--
Dear Diary; in the end, it turns out I got both mom and dad's feathers. obviously I got dad's 'family feather' as we called it. The two green ones were mom's, she left them with us when she left because they had been a gift from dad and she didn't want any memory of him when she was gone.
I keep dad's around my wrist, like he did, so I can always hold his handhold his hand. The others are on my ear. The others are on my ear, so mom will always be on n my mind, and my tail, because she wasn't really part of of my past. -- (499 Words)

☆ SUMMER MELODY ☆ narrative -- competition aSummer sat on the pier, looking at the ocean in front of her, intrigued by the surfers who caught the inky blue waves like a spider catching its prey. Her mother watched her from afar, a small sigh as she knew that Summer was still young to surf, or do anything at all for that matter. She was coming of age today. She and the rest of the family wanted to give her something special for her birthday, something meaningful she planned to give as Summer grew older. Summer was the youngest in the family, energetic, ambitious, like her elder siblings.
Her mother walked up to her and sat beside her, pulling her close and whispering, "Happy birthday, sweetheart." Summer turned to face her and smiled, mumbling "Thanks" with a sleepy look on her face before adding, "Mama, when I'm older, I want to be like you... I want to learn how to surf and make you proud." She looked down at the water, fidgeting with her bracelets. Her mother looked at her with a faint smile, and replied, "I'm glad you are so determined at such a young age. I promise you will be, and you would always make me proud." She stood up and picked Summer up in her arms, and took her back inside for her nap.
A few hours later, Summer woke up again. She rubbed her eyes and stretched, as she thoroughly enjoyed her nap. The first thing she grabbed was her beloved stuffed doll. She leaped off her bed and grabbed for the door knob, only to fall backwards from a flash of lights as her whole family yelled, "Surprise!". Summer had a look of both surprise and awe as everyone, even her clumsy brother, were wearing fancy outfits. The whole house outwards was decorated with vivid colors, and a large cake many large presents, and a glass box was on the table. She jumped and hugged her mother tightly, and then one by one hugged her many siblings.
"Now Summer, something extremely special is happening today, too," Her mother said, as she helped her up on the chair. Summer looked over and gasped, as she saw five feathers in colors similar to a beach ball, in a glass box. She turned around and asked, "These are for me?" Her mother nodded and opened the box, holding the feathers for her. "These are extremely special: I'm sure you wouldn't lose them, but take care of them. These are all given with blessings from the family for our little girl growing up!" Her mother replaced Summer's two earrings with the feathers, and added one to her wrist, and two to her tail.
Summer looked at it admiringly and hugged everyone once again, knowing that she was lucky to get so many feathers at her age. After the party was over, she sat on her bed with her doll and knew that this was a sign of something new that was soon going to begin.

Competition B for Casper:
Casper sat with his back to the post of the Boardwalk while his pet bat, Omen, squawked and fluttered about for food. Casper handed him a piece of dried mango to calm down his little friend, then turned his attention to the Kiamara’s that were taking in the sights and attractions of the pier. He often kia-watched during the day; living on the street with no family to speak of, he had nothing better to do. He loved watching all of them with their different personalities and quirks, but his favorite thing to look at was their feathers. He loved seeing all of them. Different shapes, colors and patterns mesmerized him. He, having PPS, would never get feathers of his own. This bothered him deeply, right to his soul. He didn’t feel like a real Kiamara without having even one, single feather. He tried ridding this feeling by tying his old blanket around his tail and wearing a bat charm around his neck, but it just wasn’t the same. He often fantasizes about how his feathers would look. He wonders that if he had a family, would they come from them? Or perhaps he would have feathers that looked like his coat in some way. However, the way he wishes to acquire them most is to use the ones he collects himself. He often walks along the beach beneath the docks, picking up feathers of various gulls and scavengers. He has even found more exotic feathers that have either washed ashore or molted from the numerous pet birds that a performer of the sideshow keeps. Finding the feathers has become a hobby of his. He finds the ones in the best condition and keeps them pressed in an old book he found, marking all he knew about the feathers: the species, how they were shaped, what in particular he likes about them. On occasion, he would find an extremely special feather that he would take extra care of. He loves finding pure white ones and experimenting with dyes, paint, and any other pigment he can muster and experiments with various color palettes and designs. He would then hang them around makeshift room. At night as he falls asleep, he looks at all of the feathers he’s created and falls asleep, only dreaming of his heart’s wish to get a feather of his own. Snapping away from his fantasy and memory, Casper stood up and placed Omen on his tail. He carefully slid down the post, landing on the soft, sandy beach below and started walking along the water’s edge. He watched the ebb and flow of the tide, waiting to find his next treasure. F u r f u r The night he receives his feathers is much the same as any other; he dreams of falling. The sky was dark at the time - empty, starless - snow fell alongside him, though the flakes were large and seemed misshapen. It ended, as always, with a sharp rush of consciousness on the floor of a large forest in winter, surrounded by snow and with a sudden feeling of familiarity. Awakening on the floor of a snow-devoid forest, he quickly shook off the strange feeling it had left him. It had been a long time since he had last let himself ponder the nature of the dream. 'He' is the one known as Furfur, a pale-furred teen, now nearly an adult, who wandered the forest alone. Those who had raised him had told tales of how a lone Kiamara found him as a child in the depths of these woods and brought him to them. Perhaps it was the dream that had drawn him back here, or perhaps the formless rumours of the one fitting the description of that lone Kiamara from his childhood that had somehow, mysteriously, wormed their way into his circles. He couldn't really say, but from the way the older Kiamara seemed to have predicted his arrival and now stood before him, he was beginning to doubt either had been a coincidence; he hated being manipulated. "You've come for them." Their voice was gruff and knowing, holding no trace of fear like many of those he made contact with. It was almost refreshing. What the other knew he had come for though, he did not, and the confusion must have shown clearly on his face, rather unusually, for they began to speak again. "When I found you, you were camouflaged amongst the snow and almost hidden by your surroundings; these brilliantly white feathers. I thought them important, kept them for you since I thought you'd be back, but it is strange. I've stored many feathers over my lifetime, but these... There is something different in their nature. Over time they darkened, some even crumbled away to ash, and now... Well, you see." The Kiamara held out four matte black feathers, each tipped with white. Carefully, perhaps even hesitantly since the other gestured for him to take them again, Furfur took the feathers offered him — and the feeling of familiarity from his dream resurfaced, causing him to stumble. A smirk began to play on his lips as he gazed almost reverently at the tainted feathers so dark against his white fur. Something told him these were perfect.

Reconnaissance trudged down the streets of London, anger welling up inside her as it always did this time of day. Returning to home from high school, to them. They never cared what she did at school. They never cared about her accomplishments. She was just a wisp of dust in the air for all that they cared.
Her parents, those who had ignored her for so long, ignored her for something she had no control over. Because she was a girl. They wanted a boy, they received a girl, and with that, they pretended she never existed, other than the meals for 3. Coming home every day, yelling ‘Hello’ to the empty halls, and her parents didn't even put the effort to glance up, to acknowledge her actuality.
So Reconnaissance took off, deciding that she’d rather be shopping or hanging elsewhere than futilely talking to air. Seeing as the specific store Reconnaissance, often called Recon, desired to go to was across the city, she decided to take a shortcut, to cut through the alleys and hidden streets that melted into the darkness of the evening. Recon knew this city like the back of her hand, but she often found secret routes that many had no discovered yet. But with that, she frequently got lost in the maze of stone and steel.
Recon slipped into a smaller alley, attempting to discover another path towards the boutique, grimacing at the putrid smell of the dumpsters that hid in the corner. She quickly licked her lips, tasting the strawberry and banana smoothie chap-stick, hoping the taste of fruit would mask the distasteful smell. She glanced down towards a murky puddle, filled with contaminated water, and felt a flash of pride. Her leopard print was gorgeous as always, fully groomed and luxurious.
Walking down an alley with heels wasn't easy, but Recon somehow pulled it off. Years of practice helped things. The alley was unusually long, and doubts began to creep up inside the older teenager’s mind, and she did consider turning back. But she persevered on. Darkness seemingly overwhelmed her, tentacles of shadows crawling towards her.
It all came to a stop as Recon smacked, face first, into a concrete wall. “Dang it, who on earth would just put a freaking solid wall right in the middle of a freaking alley? Not cool at all!” She yelled into the sky. Turning around, Recon went to go back the way she came from, something caught her vibrant eyes. A glimpse of dark pink.
Leaning over, she quickly snatched the feathers off of the ground, looking at them carefully. They were a beautiful dark shade of pink, matching her eyes, with white speckles that rose from the bottom. Recon held a strange attraction towards the feathers, and maybe these were ‘hers.’ She quickly pulled the string that was attached to the stop, fastened the feathers around her tail, and headed away. How I got my Feathers: Competition B
Titus
Titus laughed along with his friends, enjoying the company of his friends. They all hung about in the game room of the teenager’s lounge, lounging about (As the name suggests) on recliner chairs and fancy modern beanbags. “Dude, you remember that time we found our feathers at the same time? That was so legit!” One of them said, and his buddy laughed along. Titus frowned, eyes holding back slight feelings of jealousy. He couldn’t get feathers, he was stuck. As a PPS, he couldn’t ever grow up. Forever stuck in this time, he was a teenager. Of course, most of the time, Titus never really cared, and tried to brush it off of his shoulders. But then there was times like these, where his non-PPS friends brought up memories of gaining feathers. PPS weren’t allowed to have feathers. ‘How would I want to get my own feathers though?’ He asked himself, and the whole story unfolded in his eyes. Titus would have trotted into a side-store on the main street, a Christmas shop only open during the winter season. Snow would have dusted the ground in a light pretty layer, causing a light chill to flutter through him. But the chill would have been soft, an enjoyed chill, if that made sense. He would go into the shop, searching for more antique Christmas items. Christmas was Titus’ only hobby, his only obsession. He held vintage snow-globes, historic ornaments, dated wrapping paper, and antique lighting. Forever stuck in a young state also allowed him to hold onto his young innocence. However, he would have been looking for something else, feathers. He already would have searched through his favorite shops for those perfect feathers that ‘click’ with him the moment his eyes rest on the fringe. Even after rustling in the shop, Titus wouldn’t be able to fly anything, not even a single feather, much less one he connected to. Giving up, he would have searched through the back for any new snow-globes that had come in that could be added to his collection. Then, moving back an older Christmas card, he would see feathers, hidden behind the envelope, and he would immediately connect to them, tie them to his tail and wrist, and leave the shop feeling happy. Feeling quite satisfied by his fantasy, Titus dived back into the conversation, which had mysteriously transformed into talk about girls. Again. [398/500]

The time I left was around my second birthday. I didn't leave a note or say tearful goodbyes. I just left.
The perilous trek I endured on my way to my destination was quite like many others I had gone through in my youth. Of course, this one was much worse than the ones I had forced myself through before. Eventually I was tired and weary, with nothing to show for it. I was a long way from home, but I wasn't going to turn back until I had finished my journey, and found what I was seeking.
But I never did. Weeks dragged on of the same padding on and on and on. At first, I searched diligently. As time wore on, however, my eyes were usually trained on the ground.
I don't know when in the countless days I saw it. But when I did, my spirits lifted to the sky as my eyes did, watching a bright violet feather float through the air. My spirits soared like the drifting feather, and I chased after it as it lowered. I jumped up, clapping it between my front paws, only to fall off a hidden precipice. When I woke, I ached. I was lying in a pool of water. The feather was gone. Probably long gone.
I could have risen and continued, but I just lay there.
As I did, and as some time passed, I felt a light tickle on my ear. I swatted it off, annoyed at the thought of insects on me. But instead of a buzz, I heard nothing. I sat up, looking around. That's when I saw the bright green feather resting on a lily. It was beautiful.
I should have turned back then. But I had sworn to find that violet feather, and I always stick to my word.
Days upon days were spent slogging through a swamp. Nothing of color was in sight. Nothing at all. I grew depressed as I walked alone through a foul-smelling bog of slick mud and brownish grass. I thought I saw it, that cursed violet feather, and I moved quickly towards it. I tripped on a hidden root trying to get to it. But it was just a leaf and my imagination. I collapsed again, ready to give up, and was once again greeted by a feather, this one bright blue
I never knew where they came from. But because of that feather, I pulled myself up and kept going, muddy and limping through these barren lands.
When I reached the border of the EastLands, I knew I was forced to go back. Without the feather I swore to find. As I started to head back through the ugly lands I came through, I was enticed by a stray dragonfly. It led me up a steep climb, but I kept going. Kept climbing.
From the top, I could see home. At my paws, a violet feather. ~

Feathers Fit For A Prince Rhaegal - PPS Teen -Contest B I am Rhaegal. I'm 29 years old-- nearer to 30-- but haven't grown since I was 17. I'm considered 'too immature' to earn my feathers, too foolish. I've turned my favorite dice into charms, a poor attempt to fill the void, and it doesn't work any more.
I can't say how much it hurts, seeing kias sometimes younger than I being handed something so important-- whether from family, from a friend, or elders... just because they can grow? Because they were lucky enough to grow up with (it sickens me to say this) 'intact brains', around others of our kind, rather than be reared by human hands since they were pups? I do not harbor any unhappiness to my family, hardly. Those humans were incredible, they instilled in me so much... but I cannot deny the jealousy in my heart that I am half a stranger to my species, to my heritage, because I do not grow.
I don't care anymore. I don't care that others of my kind think, because of an aspect of my birth, I can't have something that is... beyond important, a cornerstone of our entire culture and heritage, it's an outrage! I am Rhaegal! They named me for a great dragon, named for a great prince. Even if the elders would consent to it... by now, I will not accept some old faded things. They will be mine. They will be magnificent, feathers fit for a prince! My home, my Farlow Island, do other kias even know of the incredible creatures here? I can see it now, sneaking up through the ancient treetops to a sleeping thunderbird and snatching even one lightning-crackled plume. Or I could be quick of tongue, riddle circles around the downy dragons of the caves and win a gilded feather from their nest. Even if I must leave Farlow, if I must journey a hundred years to the highest peaks... I'd seek out Talonzi himself, beg or fight or bribe him with all I own and will ever own after for so much as one scrap of down. I will find feathers as magnificent as my wings would have been, if I were born in another time... Even if the journey ends in my own demise... I will go bearing something that is well and truly mine. I will prove I am wise enough, strong enough... even if I am simply an orphan, a kia lost from his kind and his heritage, I still belong.
But perhaps... perhaps I am simply deluding myself, just wasting my time on dreams that will never come true. Feathers or none, I will still be treated like a child. Still an orphan, no family... and never wings, no matter how I might dream of them. I am simply Rhaegal, one who will never know his place. (465/500, calculated here.)
